Sensitive Categories and Audience Segments

To maintain ethical advertising practices and comply with Trade Desk’s data privacy standards, Choozle does not allow audience targeting that falls under sensitive categories. As a result, certain third-party audience segments may appear as deprecated.

What Are Sensitive Categories?

Sensitive categories include types of audience data that can reveal personal or protected information about individuals. These data points cannot be used for targeting or segmentation within Choozle.

The following categories are restricted:

  • Race or ethnicity
  • Religion or belief
  • Sexual orientation
  • Health or disability status
  • Political affiliation or opinions
  • Union membership.

Why You May See Deprecated Segments

If an audience segment violates these standards, it will be deprecated and appear highlighted in yellow when added to a new or existing audience. In some cases, audiences containing deprecated segments may also remain in a pending status. This means the segment can no longer be used in active audiences or campaigns.

To confirm and troubleshoot if an audience is deprecated, please follow the steps on our article on Troubleshooting Pending Status in Custom Audiences

Compliant Targeting Alternatives

While sensitive category data is not permitted, there are several effective and compliant ways to reach relevant audiences in Choozle:

  1. Contextual Targeting
Serve ads alongside relevant content instead of relying on user identity.
Example: Instead of targeting “Christian audiences,” you can target content related to “Gospel music,” or “Faith-based publications”.
  2. Geo Targeting
Reach users within specific cities, regions, or zip codes.
Example: Focus your campaign on areas near community centers, event venues, or regions where your desired audience is most active.
  3. Custom Audiences
Use your own first-party data to create Custom Audiences from your website visitors, CRM lists, or prior engagement activity.
  4. Language or Cultural Targeting
Reach users based on language preferences or culturally relevant content.
Example: “Spanish-speaking audiences” instead of “Hispanic audiences.”
  5. DEI and Minority-Owned Inventory
Choozle offers access to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and minority-owned inventory partners through The Trade Desk, allowing our clients to support inclusive media buying strategies.
